Toronto cyclists: Over 10 km of car-free roads on tap this weekend

Friday, May 14th 2021, 1:34 pm - Fantastic weather news for cyclists this weekend, as warming temperatures and abundant sunshine finally allow for some great riding conditions.

Put the leg-warmers in the closet cyclists, as a big warm-up is in store across the Greater Toronto Area, making for ideal riding conditions throughout this upcoming weekend.

Join the thousands of cyclists this week on Active TO’s Lake Shore Blvd West route, which opens Saturday morning at 6 am through Sunday evening (9 pm).

  • 8.8% grade, 90 m vertical
  • Surface type: gravel

For those who are a little tired of mundane High Park loops, turn it into a 5.2 km dynamic adventure. Head south to the Queensway, then ascend Ellis Ave. Turn right and dive down Ellis Park Rd, before a punchy climb up to Bloor St. As an added challenge, take the Olympic Ave. Switchback.

Friday: Stunning riding conditions with temperatures mid-teens directly along the Lakeshore and 20°C inland. Light winds dominate the day with a little more afternoon clouds developing. Light southerly lake breeze 10-20 km/h keeping temperatures near mid-teens directly along the lake. Some partly cloudy skies building through the afternoon.

Saturday: The only pop-up thunderstorm threat of the entire weekend, mainly inland - so just a slight chance these storms move towards the lakeshore late Saturday afternoon, with locally increasing clouds. A southwest wind of 10-20 km/h through the afternoon

The 6 km flagship ActiveTO route opens up along Lake Shore Blvd. West, giving cyclists 10 km of car-free segments across the city.

Sunday: Another dry day with temperatures in the upper teens by the lake and low 20’s inland once again. 10-20 km/h lake breeze developing, but this day looks to be dominated by sunshine.
