Friday, August 22, 2014, 10:59 AM - Cover up your plants!

That was the warning from Environment Canada in a frost advisory issued for parts of Alberta on Thursday night.

PATTERN CHANGE: Dr. Doug Gillham provides a detailed analysis of the weather for the end of August.

"Weather Advisories for Frost are issued when the temperatures are expected to reach the freezing mark during the growing season, leading to potential damage to plants and crops," the statement read.

"Cold temperatures will persist across much of Alberta again today and parts of Saskatchewan will suffer a similar plight throughout the weekend as the upper-level trough responsible for the cold temperatures pushes east," says Weather Network meteorologist Brett Sodeholm.

Margeaux Morin explains what you need for the weekend in Edmonton:

Significant rain is also forecast for the eastern Prairies this weekend as a low pushes up from the states.

"Preliminary estimates indicate as much as 60 mm could fall over two days in southern Saskatchewan, while closer to 80 mm is possible along the Manitoba/Ontario border," adds Soderholm.
