Friday, August 22, 2014, 11:06 AM - Wondering what you missed overnight or what you can expect for the day ahead?

Here's your weather briefing for Friday, August 22.

    1. High pressure dominates Atlantic Canada this weekend

High pressure will continue to build into the region this weekend, "keeping things relatively quiet throughout the weekend and into next week," says Weather Network meteorologist Brett Soderholm.

"Fairly quiet and seasonal across much of the region today, though a few isolated showers are expected along the eastern shores of Nova Scotia," Soderholm adds.

    2. Humidity to persist across Ontario

Moderate to heavy rain fell in eastern Ontario Thursday.

"No official totals are available as of yet, but numerous Weather Network Stormline callers indicated 'extremely heavy downpours' were taking place around the 4-6 pm hours," says Soderholm.

Thunderstorms may fire up again in eastern Ontario Friday afternoon and evening, but the storms should be non-severe in nature.

"Humidity will persist in southern Ontario throughout the day today and into the weekend, with actual temperatures only slightly below the seasonal mark," Soderholm says.

    3. Slow moving storms cause major flooding in Manitoba

A relatively stationary line of storms initiated over Winnipeg Thursday resulting in major flooding in and around the city.

"No official amounts have been released, though 25-50 mm of rain in under two hours has been reported by a meteorologist at Environment Canada," says Soderholm, adding that other sources claim up to 75 mm fell.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for this system, which started at around 7 pm local time.

    4. Cold temps prompt frost advisories in Alberta

    Cover up your plants!

That was the warning from Environment Canada in a frost advisory issued for parts of Alberta on Thursday night.

"Weather Advisories for Frost are issued when the temperatures are expected to reach the freezing mark during the growing season, leading to potential damage to plants and crops," the statement read.

"Cold temperatures will persist across much of Alberta again today and parts of Saskatchewan will suffer a similar plight throughout the weekend as the upper-level trough responsible for the cold temperatures pushes east," Soderholm says.

Margeaux Morin explains what you need for the weekend in Edmonton:

Significant rain is also forecast for the eastern Prairies this weekend as a low pushes up from the states.

"Preliminary estimates indicate as much as 60 mm could fall over two days in southern Saskatchewan, while closer to 80 mm is possible along the Manitoba/Ontario border," adds Soderholm.
