Morning Briefing: the return of Hurricane Ana while cold air blows through Canada

Saturday, October 25, 2014, 7:24 AM - Wondering what you missed overnight or what you can expect going forward?

Don't worry. We have you covered here at The Weather Network.

Here is your morning briefing for October 25, 2014.

1. When it rains in Atlantic Canada, it pours.

Rain began to push further into Newfoundland. Some areas picked up about 30 millimetres of rain as of 3 a.m. ADT. The messy weather prompted new rainfall warnings for places in central Nova Scotia where amounts were hovering near 50 mm. The warnings were dropped after a couple of hours.

The low affecting Nova Scotia will track into Newfoundland today. People in St. John's might want to have an umbrella ready because that light rain is sticking around all day long.

Environment Canada also issued a weather summary for the rain in Nova Scotia with preliminary rainfall amounts received as of Friday 9:00 p.m., local time.

City  Rainfall (mm)
Yarmouth 109.4
Greenwood 56.8
Halifax Stanfield 66.0
Baccaro Point 137.0
Western Head 106.2
Parrsboro 94.6
Debert 75.4
Kentville 70.1
Cape Sable Island 189.2
Woodstock 104.0
Deerfield 84.0

2. A cold front moves into Ontario

It was a dry and seasonal day on Friday for most of Ontario and Quebec but will that trend continue on Saturday?

Unlikely. While the rainfalls expected in some parts of southern Ontario aren't particular impressive, to the north there is a higher chance of some messy weather as a cold front tracks through the great lakes. Interesting fact: Thunder Bay went from 5C at midnight, up to 15C at 2 a.m. before dropping again when winds picked up.

Southern Ontario could see temperatures climb today before dropping off on Sunday as cooler air finds its way into the area.

There is also a chance of thunderstorm activity in eastern Canada and into Quebec.

3. Snow for the Prairies?

Drastically different temperatures are expected in the region. Parts of Manitoba could hit record highs, including Gretna that is expected to be the country's hot spot today with a high of 22.5C. On the other hand Saskatoon and Calgary will see temperatures barely above 10 degrees.

Northern Saskatchewan reported some snow overnight as the temps dropped under 0. And that might not be the s-word's only appearance this week. A storm tracking through B.C. will head into the Prairies on Sunday and bring mixed precipitation. Places like Calgary will mostly get rain but the mountains and north of that could see a bit of snow.

4. The return of Hurricane Ana

Ana re-intensified into a hurricane as it moves toward the B.C. coast. The currently-Category 1 storm should downgrade to a tropical storm as it encounters cool sea surface temperatures. By the time it hits the Canadian west coast, Ana should once again be a post tropical storm. The expected landfall is some time between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Fortunately for places like a Vancouver, yesterday was a day off from the relentless parade of storms that have been affecting the area. Unfortunately, that was followed by another low pressure system moving into the area and bringing some light rain into the overnight hours.

Saturday should be another wet day. Rainfall totals in Victoria and Vancouver could range from 30 to 50 millimetres.

But even a little rain could have major complications. Saturated soil and clogged sewer grates could trigger landslides and local flooding.
