Breakthroughs in earthquake technology could save millions

Wednesday, June 29, 2016, 2:52 PM - Though not as known for it as Japan or Chile, Canada is an earthquake-prone nation, and emergency planners are always on the lookout for ways to mitigate the risk for when a big one hits.

British Columbia's Lower Mainland, for example, was the site of the largest earthquake known to have struck North America, in 1700, and experts say that area is at risk of very powerful "megathrust" quake in the future.

Weather Network reporter Jeff Haggington went down to the University of Toronto's Civil Engineering Structural Laboratory to have a look at how scientists are preparing for future quakes.

The laboratory's researchers are able to simulate the effects of major earthquakes, and are experimenting with new building materials designed to better absorb the shock of a major earthquake.
