"Welcomed back by a lightning strike to the plane just as we were coming into land at Heathrow," said one twitter user.

Another passenger said they heard a "huge light and crack" as the plane was preparing to land.

According to British Airways, flight BA857, which had departed from Prague, landed safely. The plane was expected to undergo inspection before returning to service.

"Lightning strikes are fairly common, and aircraft are designed to cope with them," British Airways said.

At least two other planes flying over London were hit by lightning on Wednesday.
