Mustang Island State Park is located on Mustang Island a coastal barrier island in Nueces County. The park is named for the hundreds of wild mustangs that resided on the island until the 1800s. Mustang Island is relatively young having formed when the ocean receded to its current level some five thousand years ago. Like other barrier islands in the area Mustang Island serves as a natural buffer between the gulf and the mainland. Mustang Island is one of Texas' only undeveloped barrier islands. The gulf side of the island consists of dunes formed by the endless pounding of the gulf's waves. On the lee side of the island is Corpus Christi Bay which is protected from the gulf's surf and storms. Here the island's landscape consists of tidal flats lagoons and placid water. People come to the park and beach to relax and get away from nearby city life. Recreational water activities include fishing swimming surfing and kayaking. If you prefer land activities you can hike bike or birdwatch. There is a 5 entrance fee for day-use of the park.Mustang Island SP#6 is located near the end of Access Rd No 3.
