What is a Samovar?

36913 views Jon Van Loon September 9, 2019 Moscow, Russia Date shot: July 22, 2008

Pictured here is a row of samovars. Literally translated samovar means self-boiler. In bygone days the samovar was used to boil water to make tea. It is heated by igniting charcoal that fills a tube that runs inside the samovar, vertically down its centre. This picture was one I took in Russia. Although most revered in Russia the samovar is not restricted to this country. The oldest known samovar is 3700 years of age found in Azerbaijan.
