Monday, October 16, 2017, 12:47 - While they were spared the worst of Storm Ophelia's brunt, Londoners and others in the U.K. spent much of Monday under ominous skies because of the storm.

The red-tinged skies had residents comparing the scene with shots from science fiction, but the source of the phenomenon is closer to home than a planet far, far away.

As former-hurricane Ophelia charged north, it dragged with it airborne Saharan sand, as well as smoke from the deadly wildfires currently burning in Portugal and Spain. The result was poor air quality and an eerie glow that caused streetlights to come on midday as skies around England and in northern France turned twilight-dim.
