When Joanna Popoff's kindergarten class from Gordon Terrace Elementary was out on their weekly field trip, a pileated woodpecker was heard calling and then spotted atop a wildlife tree. Then it flew to a nearby cottonwood, but couldn't be seen anywhere until one of the adults spotted it pop its head out of a hole in the trunk half way up the tree. For the next few minutes the children watched fascinated as the large woodpecker kept popping its head out of the hole and dropping wood shavings to the ground. Where else but at Elizabeth Lake?
