Persistent strong north winds have kept this hatch-year male Northern Hawk Owl grounded for now. Males are normally the last to leave with juvenile and females leaving first. Occasionally it is heard singing. The song of the male is a rolling whistled "ulululululul," which can last for over 10 seconds. The female has a similar but shorter and hoarser song. The feathers around the throat area can be seen fluttering as the owl vocalizes. For now the owl appears to be waiting for favourable winds to assist its journey northward back to its boreal forest home.
