Blue jay "anting: on our shed roof

15168 views Peter Sporring September 22, 2022 Belleville, Ontario Date shot: September 16, 2022

What is anting in Blue Jays? “Anting” is the process in which a jay, with wings spread and tail tucked between its legs, grabs an ant in its bill and rubs it through its feathers before swallowing the ant. The formic acid the ant releases when grabbed gets rid of any parasites that may be in the birds feathers.
