The common snapping turtle is the largest freshwater turtle found in Canada, with a shell length of up to 50 cm and weight exceeding 15 kg. It is estimated that they can live 30 to 40 years in the wild, perhaps even longer. We see these each year digging in the beach on what we call pebble beach on the shores of Humber Bay in Lake Ontario. It's our little piece of paradise where we see egrets, herons (of several species) and a variety of interesting birds. This year there are many oriole sightings.
