The birds are showing awareness of picking up the scent of the burning bushes and smoke from the fires of northwestern Ontario and Manitoba.News released an air quality bulletin. I could smell the fires and the smoke also.It was strong. The herons were surely aware of the event. They were stretching "up" their necks as high as they could to smell the air. They flew to the tree tops to investigate at a higher level. They checked the air from the water level to the tree tops. They knew.
