Following the end of the Second World War in 1945, when Canada had liberated the Netherlands, Princess Juliana presented Canada with 100,000 tulip bulbs as a gesture of gratitude for . Since then, the tulip has become a symbol to represent the friendship between the Netherlands and Canada. Also a thank you for allowing the Dutch Royal Family to be evacuated to Canada during the Nazi occupation of Netherlands and especially for making a wing of the Civic Hospital Dutch Territory so that her daughter Margriet could be born a Dutch Citizen and a Princess. Today there can be up to 3 million tulips blooming in the National Capital Region of which 20,000 a year are received from the Netherlands (and that doesn't include those on private property).
