What Unique Feature Defines this Canal

24556 views Jon Van Loon September 25, 2020 Panama Canal, Panama Date shot: April 13, 2012

The small electric locomotive, known as a towing mule, shown here travelling along the near side of this canal in my photo, uniquely defines this as the Panama Canal. No other canal in the world requires ships, in this case a submarine, to be towed in such a manner instead of motoring untethered under their own power. Although not obvious in this photo another towing mule travelling along the far side of the canal is also tethered to this sub.
