As a consultant to Beijing Normal University, I was in Beijing in June 1990. On June 4 of that month, exactly 1 year after the date that is recognised as the date of remembrance for this terrible event, I took this picture from across the street from the sidewalk on Chang'an Ave. looking onto the square. As far as I could tell everyone except the Chinese Army was forbidden entry to the square on that day. This picture shows army Jeep like vehicles that were parked there, having been used to transport the members of the army guard there to. The building in the background is Mao's tomb.
