Grand Canyon

10564 views Jon Van Loon May 23, 2017 Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, United States Date shot: April 8, 2014

Located in NW Arizona the Grand Canyon was carved out by the Colorado River over a period of about 6 million years. This massive cloven feature is up to 30 km across, 2000 m deep and 480 km in length. The walls of the Canyon cut down through about 2 billion years of earth history from top to bottom. I took these photos both from the south rim and overflying in a small aircraft. Note from these pictures that the Colorado River can be both muddy and clear depending on local runoff from rain storms. The canyon was discovered in 1540 by the Spaniard Garcia Lopez de Cardenas.
