"WARNING" Fragile, Extremely Fragile !!! Long Point is about 40 kilometres long and a kilometre across at its widest point. It's another world and it could be gone if we ever get a strong windstorm or if Lake Erie's water level starts rising again! Take a close look at this photograph, there's sections already breached by lake water. Long Point is a very important stopover location for migratory waterfowl, butterflies and other wildlife. Conservation efforts started way back in the 1800s and much of the area is still owned by The Long Point Company. The public is forbidden to enter. In 1986, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated The Long Point National Wildlife Area as a World Biosphere Reserve.
