The sound is familiar to many residents throughout Norfolk County, Ontario, the howl of Coyotes. They have long inhabited the outskirts of towns but are now starting to invade subdivisions more and more. They're a carnivore and as such, they will commonly take livestock, chickens, sheep, pigs, or domestic animals, but it's due to their ease of hunting. They aren't targeting livestock or your pet cat or dog, but if the pickins’ are easy. That's why you should play safe if you are aware of a coyote in your neighbourhood. With a lifespan of 10 to 14 years, this smaller relative of the wolf once called the American Jackal, has a top speed of 65 kph (40 mph), will travel up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) to find food, can hear you up to 1.6 km (1 mile) away and will even bring live mice to their den for their offspring to practice hunting.
