Today is BC Rivers Day and World Rivers Day, a time to celebrate not only creeks, rivers and lakes but also wetlands. Wetlands fulfil many important roles including helping with flood mitigation after extreme weather events like storms because they act like sponges, as well as storing water during dry spells like we've just experienced this summer. They also act like a filter on pollution which may make its way to the wetland through storm drains or run off the land during precipitation. They are provide shelter and food for many animals including mammals and birds. They are also a place for humans to explore, enjoy and appreciate. Where else but at a wetland like Elizabeth Lake?
