An Endangered Aussie Landmark

15074 views Jon Van Loon November 17, 2020 Great Barrier Reef, QLD, Australia Date shot: March 17, 2012

In this photo my wife and I are flying in a helicopter a few hundred meters above the endangered Great Barrier Reef off the shores of NE Australia. The combination of rising water temperatures, poor water quality from runoff sediment and pollution, crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks and more frequent cyclones, are the major threats to the Great Barrier Reef and the marine life that depends on it. Although not visible in my photo it is often possible to see any of six species of large turtles, most often a type called the Green Turtle also listed as endangered in this area.
