Young boy dies after being left in hot car, woman charged

Friday, September 22, 2017, 1:53 PM - A woman has been charged in the death of a four-year-old boy who was left in a hot car for several hours on Thursday.

Zeljna Kosovac, 50, was formally charged Friday in court in Toronto with criminal negligence. Police told media Kosovac was the boy's caregiver, and Const. David Hopkinson told The Canadian Press Kosovac was supposed to drop him off at a daycare, though it's not clear why this did not take place.

CTV News reports a cleaning crew spotted the boy unconscious in the back seat of the car in the early afternoon, and broke a window to get him free.

He was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

Toronto Star reporter Victoria Gibson said on Twitter Kosovac was released on bail and will reappear in court on October 16.

The temperature at the time the boy was found was 26oC, feeling hotter than 30 with the humidity. In any case, the temperature inside the car would have been much hotter.
