Thursday, November 16, 2017, 9:11 AM - Snowfall warnings and special weather statements cover much of the Prairie provinces Thursday as a system moves through, the latest round of wintry weather for the region.

"Most of the precipitation will be scattered light rain or rain/snow mix for southern areas, but in the form of snow for central and northern sections," Weather Network meteorologist Nadine Hinds-Powell said early Thursday.

The heaviest snowfall accumulations are likely to be in the 10 cm range, forecasters say, and the system will produce winds up to 60 km/h.

Freezing rain is also a risk as temperatures plunge, with some warnings in effect for western Saskatchewan.

"Warm air is being advected north with this system, with sub-zero surface temperatures conditions are prime for freezing rain," one such warning reads. "There have already been some reports of freezing rain in Alberta. The freezing rain hazard should end later this morning."

Looking ahead, a chilly weekend is ahead for most of the region, though with a brief warm up for southern Alberta, then a reinforcing shot of Arctic air will come early next week, behind a clipper system that will bring strong winds and a swath of snow for some areas.
