Welcome to hailstorm alley

Anyone who lives in a stretch of Alberta from Calgary to Red Deer to Edmonton, east of the Rocky Mountains, wouldn't be surprised to learn it's the most hailstorm-prone area on Earth.

It's all to do with the altitude, the shape of the land, and other factors which come together in the right mix to make hailstorms more likely.
