"Seasonal air continues into the weekend with mainly sunny skies in the Maritimes," says Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern. "The low pressure system over Ontario this week and weekend will eventually move over the Maritimes Sunday into Monday, weakening significantly as it does."

Meanwhile, special weather statements were in place for parts of Newfoundland Thursday, as 50 mm of rain fell locally, with roughly 30 mm at St. John's International Airport.

An additional 5 to 10 mm is on tap for the evening hours before conditions ease out.

Strong winds are also expected as the system moves south of the island for the Avalon, Bonavista and Burin Peninsulas.

"Wind gusts out of the north will range from 50-75 km/h," Wenckstern says.

Looking ahead, Newfoundland will see mainly dry and clear conditions through the weekend as an area of high pressure keeps moisture off the coast.
