Tuesday, July 8, 2014, 11:21 AM - A meteorologist at a Detroit TV station has been hospitalized after losing his left eye in a fireworks accident.

It's not clear how it occurred, but Dave Rexroth of WXYZ TV in Detroit was on vacation with his family in Iowa City on the July 4 long weekend when the incident caused him to lose his sight.

He was admitted to hospital and is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday, beginning the process of receiving a prosthetic eye.

The Daily Mail reports firefighters responded to an emergency a little after 10 p.m., to attend to a man with "severe burns."

WXYZ says Rexroth is expected to be fully recovered by September, and will return to the station.

"We look forward to his return to Action News,” Ed Fernandez, vice president and general manager of WXYZ, said in a statement.

Rexroth, 48, has been with the station for 14 years.
