Monday, February 12, 2018, 9:44 PM - Tropical cyclone Gita battered Tonga on Monday night at strength equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, producing 233 km/h winds and heavy rain.

"The storm's eyewall raked across Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, Monday evening (local time), battering the city with destructive winds and flooding rain," said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The Category 4 storm was moving south across the Pacific and was expected to hit Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa, by 7 p.m. on Monday (0600 GMT), prompting the island nation to declare a state of emergency.

The island of Tonga (about 2,400 km from New Zealand) declared a state of emergency Monday and imposed a curfew in the capital Nuku'alofa as the Pacific island kingdom braced for a direct hit from severe Tropical Cyclone Gita. This storm was forecast to flood the islands with nearly 250 mm of rain. Local forecasters say Tonga's capital was likely hit with winds up to 230 km/h at it's peak.

The UK Met Office said the storm was the worst to hit Tonga in at least 60 years.
