Tourists take a dip in harbour known to contain raw sewage

Thursday, July 21, 2016, 6:57 PM - Baltimore's Inner Harbour has been known to contain trash and raw sewage, but that didn't stop a group of apparent tourists from diving in and taking a swim earlier this month.

A YouTube video posted last week shows at least 15 people wading through the water as a group of concerned locals look on.

One onlooker said the people are from Chicago and "don't know no better."

The YouTube video was captured by Jamone McKenzie.

"These guys decided to think jumping in the inner harbor water was fun, but little do they know that the water is crawling with diseases!" Reads the video's caption.

Adam Lindquist of the Waterfront Partnership's Healthy Harbor Initiative told the Baltimore Sun he advises against swimming in the harbour, even though there are no regulations against it.

"I would not recommend doing that. Our biggest pollution problem in the Baltimore Harbor is the raw sewage that’s overflowing or leaking from the city’s system," he told the publication, adding the city is taking steps to reduce pollution in the area.

If warm weather is what prompted the group to jump into the harbour, there could be potential for a repeat performance this weekend: Forecasters are expecting a daily high around 36C Saturday, feeling like 40 with the humidex.
