Thursday, June 21, 2018, 12:41 PM - A recent study revealed that Toronto, Ontario is an awful place to commute. Of course, most of those living in the GTA already knew that.

Toronto came in at spot 69 out of 74 – making it the 6th worst city to commute in worldwide. It was surpassed by Rio de Janiero, Sao Paulo, and Salvador in Brazil, Bogota in Columbia, and Istanbul in Turkey.

Toronto drivers have been described as “aggressive” and “selfish” by some…

...while others blame public transit systems for traffic problems.

Regardless, commuting in any large city is bound to be troublesome.

HOW WERE THEY RANKED?

The study was completed by Expert Market UK and looked at 74 of the world’s largest cities with available public transit. It ranked the cities in order from best to worst by looking at factors such as metro population, average journey distance, average number of hours spent in traffic while commuting, and more. After taking all factors into account, the numbers were calculated into a score that gave each city their ranking.

Nice, France took the #1 spot. Other major Canadian cities ranked relatively high, but not in the top 30. Vancouver, BC made the #33 spot, Ottawa, ON took #38, and Montreal, QC was #46.

Toronto’s average time commuting is a whopping 96 minutes, a mere one minute off from Bogota (the 2nd worst city) at 97 minutes. The average time waiting for a bus or train is only 14 minutes, just one minute behind Nice at 13 minutes, and twice as fast as Brasillia, Brazil (7th worst city) at 28 minutes.

An amazing 73% of commuters have to make “at least one change in a single journey”, though that’s not the worst! 80% of commuters in Cali, Colombia said the same thing. In Bari, Italy, only 31% of commuters agreed.

The cost of a monthly transit pass as a percentage of monthly income in Toronto ranked at 6.50%, while Santos e Baixada Santista, Brazil, came in at 10.56%. Can you imagine spending nearly 11% of your monthly income on a bus pass?

Other North American cities ranked as follows:

  • Minneapolis St. Paul, Minnesota - #20
  • San Diego, California - #27
  • Denver, Colorado - #35
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - #43
  • Portland, Oregon - #49
  • Chicago, Illinois - #50
  • New York City - #57
  • Los Angeles, California - #60
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - #62
  • Washington, DC-Baltimore - #63
  • Miami, Florida - #66
