Toronto may finally reach first 20 degree day of the year

Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 11:22 AM - Despite the recent warm-up and long awaited spring conditions, this month in Toronto could actually go down as one of the coldest April's on record.

Another alarming stat. The city has yet to crack the 20ºC mark so far this April, which is actually quite abnormal and has only happened just over a dozen times in the last 80 years. That's not to say we should write off the month just yet however, as an unusually warm and humid air mass could help to bring a surge of early summer heat starting April 30. We just need to shake off another cooler than normal upcoming weekend first.

"After this weekend, temperatures will reach at least the upper teens on Monday (April 30), with the potential for many in southern Ontario (including Toronto's Pearson Airport) to reach 20°C for the first time this year," says Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham. "Temperatures will reach the lower 20s (and possibly mid 20s) across most of the region on Tuesday and a southwest wind means that cooler lake breezes off Lake Ontario will be less of a factor than what we saw earlier this week."

EVEN WARMER TEMPERATURES (AND A POTENTIAL HUMIDEX) FOLLOW

Next Wednesday and Thursday have a lot of potential for warmth, but a lot of uncertainty comes with it as well.

"The amount of sunshine that we will see is uncertain as well as the timing of the cold front that will eventually bring an end to our period of warmer weather late next week," says Gillham. "An unusually warm and humid air mass will be in place, which would readily support temperatures reaching the mid to upper 20s and a humidex into the 30s if we have well timed sunshine."

Too much cloud cover or a faster arrival of the cold front (late Wednesday vs. late Thursday) would hold temperatures to the lower 20s. Still, it's the warmest weather for the city so far this year and will likely be a welcome change from the pesky and persistent wintry conditions.
