Meteorologists say conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes in parts of southern Saskatchewan Friday.

At 10:15 CST, a tornado warning was issued for the R.M. of Torch River including Choiceland and White Fox.

"Meteorologists are tracking a tornado 5 km north of Choiceland," said Environment Canada in the warning statement. "Take cover, if threatening weather approaches, in a sturdy permanent building or underground."

Shortly after a tornado watch was issued for the Melfort, Tisdale and Nipawin areas.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of weak funnel clouds that may touch the ground," says Gina Ressler, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "These are non super cell storms however, and normally do not have the energy to reach down."

Still, residents are urged to treat all funnel clouds and tornadoes seriously and avoid when possible.
