Tornado rips through Arkansas leaving one dead and four injured

Tuesday, October 14, 2014, 9:05 AM - One man in his 30s is dead after an EF2 tornado tore through his Arkansas home early Monday morning.

The marine and father of three was in his house with his wife and children when the storm caught the family by surprise. His wife is currently in critical condition and recovering from surgery while the three children only sustained minor injuries.

A second tornado was reported in the nearby community of England, AK, damaging structures that were recovering from being hit by another twister on October 2, 2014.

The vast system responsible for the tornadoes in Arkansas has also sprouted twisters in other nearby states including Missouri. Powerful thunderstorms were reported in Georgia where drivers were forced to commute through pools of water as rainfall accumulated in low-lying areas. In Alabama, a 75-year-old woman was killed after a tree fell on her home.

U.S. officials estimate that 36 million people were in the path of damaging storms this past week and expect that number to increase as more nasty weather is expected to hit the area later Tuesday. Tornadoes are still probable for much of the south in the region known as Dixie Alley.

Nearly 100,000 people were left without power at one point but that number has been reduced by about half.
