Between the glittering U.S. cities of Los Angeles and Las Vegas lies the Mojave Desert.

It’s a harsh land, home to Death Valley where the hottest temperature in North America was recorded, 57°C on July 10, 1913 at Furnace Creek Ranch. The Mojave lies in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains but is home to about 2,000 species of plants.

That includes the Joshua tree, the evergreen yucca from which the national park gets its name.

Our colleagues at the US Weather Channel take us to the Mojave Desert in today’s time lapse.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Next week, we're taking a behind-the-scenes look at the TWN newsroom.

Behind the scenes, Digital Editor Cheryl Santa Maria is coordinating new time lapse installments. Stay tuned, we're heading to Vancouver soon!
