Canadian "snowbirds" love escaping to this U.S. state in the dead of winter.

And no wonder: It's one of the sunniest American states.

The capital, Phoenix, is the sunniest city in the country with 86% sunshine. But the climate varies across the state.

There are snowy ski slopes in the north, whereas the desert in the southwest gets less than 8 cm of precipitation all year long.

Those landscapes are a huge draw for visitors who may be surprised to see signs in the middle of the desert warning drivers not to cross roads when flooded.

June 15 to September 30 is monsoon season. A large scale shift in wind patterns brings mighty storms and about half the year’s rainfall -- so flash flooding is a real danger.

Today’s time lapse travels to Arizona during monsoon season with photographer Mike Olbinski.

NYC BLACKOUT: Next Tuesday, we'll re-visit Hurricane Sandy with photographer Michael Marantz.
