Canadian-owned Pelmorex Media Inc., a leader in weather-related information services and parent company of The Weather Network, announced its expansion into the U.K. market.  The Weather Network U.K. marks the second phase of the company’s targeted international expansion strategy following last year’s acquisition of Eltiempo.es, Spain's leading multi-platform weather-related information service.

The Weather Network and its French counterpart MétéoMédia enjoy high brand recognition and loyalty in Canada, as over 20 million Canadians visit the company’s platforms every month. Pelmorex plans to build on its successful approach in Canada and Spain and become a comprehensive source for leading weather information in this new market.

“We believe there is an opportunity for a focused company with deep weather expertise to establish a strong presence in the U.K.,” said Ron Close, President and CEO of Pelmorex Media Inc. “Many of our innovative weather features such as; 14-day outlook, hourly precipitation values and future radar prediction have not been available in the U.K. until now.  In the immediate future the focus will be on localizing web and mobile applications to meet the unique needs of that country’s market, as we have in Canada and in Spain.”

Expansion plans include active recruitment to grow the team at its U.K. headquarters. Taylor Emerson, Pelmorex’s Senior Vice President, International, is already located in London, England, and will oversee the hiring of local staff, including positions in news writing, meteorology, product and content development, sales and marketing.

“A key priority for us is to understand and respect the weather-related preferences in each market we serve.  We have learned that weather terminology, features, icons and even consumer habits differ from country to country.  We are not one size fits all.  We will take the time to develop an authentic U.K. experience that is compelling to consumers in that market.  And we are doing so through local talent, and a local team,” added Close.

Pelmorex’s international expansion plans include the near-term launch of weather services across multi-platforms, including Web, Applications and Television in the US and in other European countries.
