Thursday, November 23, 2017, 7:16 PM - Ottawa's $5.6 million skating rink on the lawn of Parliament Hill will debut next week, and remain open two months later than previously announced. However, be careful not to slip ... or have too much fun.

The Canadian government confirmed the Canada 150 themed rink will remain operational through the city's Winterlude festival, closing February 28, 2018, instead of the original close date of January 1, 2018.

"We've been working with the Speakers of the House & Senate. We're happy to announce that #Canada150 Rink on the Hill will remain open through #Winterlude & to the end of February," Minister of Canadian Heritage Mélanie Joly tweeted Thursday.

"This will allow even more families to lace up their skates for this once in a lifetime opportunity."

Strict rules for skaters

People wanting to skate on the rink will have to follow a strict set of rules, among them: No hockey sticks, no hot chocolate, and no electronic devices on the ice.

Only people wearing skates will be allowed on the rink, and skaters must book their 40-minute time on the rink 48 hours beforehand. Guests are expected to show up for the reserved spot about an hour prior to getting on the ice.

It's recommended skaters wear CSA-approved helmets, but not required.

The government says it reserves the right to cancel, shorten or modify skate times.

Canadians have been quick to take to social media to discuss the rules, which aren't typical of traditional ice rinks.

The rink can hold up to 200 people at a time. Once it closes, the government says it will be donated to a community.

The Canada 150 rink will open December 7, coinciding with the Christmas Lights Across Canada illumination ceremony.
