Wednesday, August 20, 2014, 12:58 PM - Thousands of strange sea creatures are washing ashore on California beaches.

They are called "by the wind sailors," but the scientific name is Velella Velella.

The creatures have a clear, distinctive fin sticking up from a blue, oval body about the size of the palm of a hand.

By-the-wind sailors do sting to catch their food, but they are not a threat to humans.

David Cader, director of education at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, says the "sting is not very potent."
