Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 8:27 AM - A Texas low is set to deliver heavy rain to southern Ontario through Tuesday, which has prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement for the region.

"A low pressure area over lower Michigan will track across southern Lake Huron and Georgian Bay into Eastern Ontario [Tuesday], bringing a large area of rain with it," Environment Canada said in a weather alert.

Areas from Windsor to Montreal are in line to pick up 20-25 mm, with locally higher amounts possible in southwestern Ontario due to the risk for some thunderstorms.

Quick Facts

  • Texas low to bring heavy rain to southern Ontario early Tuesday.
  • Rain to last through Tuesday, heaviest in the southwest, more than 30 mm possible.
  • Next system moves in on Thursday.

"Ponding is possible on the roads, and the ground is still frozen so it is a bit of an interesting event for this time of the year," The Weather Network meteorologist Kevin MacKay says, adding that this rainfall is a significant event for the region.

The rain will end by Tuesday night as the low-pressure area moves into Quebec.

Gusty northwest winds behind this system could gust up to 60 km/h Tuesday evening through southern Ontario.

"North of Montreal and Quebec City could see 10-15 cm of snow with this first Texas low, with an additional 20-30 cm with the second low to finish the week, great news for skiers," adds MacKay.

Forecasters say another system is ahead for Thursday. The Weather Network's Dr. Doug Gillham has the details here.
