Soaking rain for Maritimes as slow-moving system moves in

Wednesday, October 3, 2018, 9:29 AM - A slow-moving system pushing into the Maritimes will make for a waterlogged Wednesday over much of the region, with a widespread 30 to 50 mm on the way. This sluggish system began pushing into southern Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on Tuesday, and will be with both provinces, and P.E.I. through much of the day on Wednesday as it lumbers toward the northeast. We take a look at the timing, plus the temperature roller coaster we'll be riding into Thanksgiving weekend, below.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Rainfall warnings in effect for parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
  • Locally heavy rain overnight through Wednesday morning as the system slows over eastern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
  • Rain creeps north and east Wednesday, with the heaviest amounts expected over Nova Scotia
  • Colder weather arrives behind the system for Thursday and Friday with a brief warm-up Saturday before cooling again by Sunday
  • Monitor watches and warnings on our ALERTS page

Environment Canada cautions some flooding is possible in low-lying areas, particularly along the Fundy Shore of New Brunswick, and for southern and eastern Nova Scotia -- regions covered by the rainfall warning. Local amounts of up to 70 mm are are possible by the time the bulk of the rain tapers off late Wednesday.

The next system to impact the region -- a low that will track well north into Labrador  -- brings with it some warmer conditions for southern parts of Atlantic Canada, as warm air surges up from the south. This should bump highs back up over the 20 degree mark for many across the southern Maritimes, although it won't be a particularly long-lived warm spell. The cold front associated with this low pressure system sweeps through into Friday, and while that means drier conditions, we're also looking at cooler temperatures with winds from the northwest.

We get a repeat performance -- albeit a weaker one -- into the weekend, as a disturbance expected to arrive by Sunday brings some showers and warmer temperatures once again, only to give way to another chilly north breeze for holiday Monday.

Check back for updates as we continue to monitor the forecast.
