Tuesday, August 22, 2017, 4:18 PM - Though the skies were relatively clear across southern Ontario for Monday's solar eclipse, clouds are gathering for much of the region Tuesday, along with a shot of severe storm risk and tornado potential.

Environment Canada has issued severe thunderstorm watches throughout southern Ontario, along with tornado watches, meaning tornadoes are possible or likely, though not yet imminent.

FALL IS BACK: An extended summer or an early start to winter? The Fall Forecast premieres Wednesday, Sept. 13 -- special all day event

"The main threats with these thunderstorms are large hail, damaging wind gusts, and torrential downpours," Environment Canada says. "The threat for isolated tornadoes is expected to develop later this morning and continue through much of the afternoon. This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation."

Non-severe storms are possible all across southern Ontario, stretching up into the Nickel Belt, but much of eastern Ontario, along with areas along the shores of Lake Erie, may see storms reach severe levels, with the main threats including heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and a chance of an isolated tornado.

"There's a little uncertainty on placement of strong storms, and it depends on how much clearing we see in spots," Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says.

By Tuesday evening, the cold front looks to exit the Greater Toronto Area and the southwest, but will continue to bring heavy rainfall through eastern Ontario and southern Quebec.

A look ahead

Unlike the intense heat in which the province has been baking so far this week, the rest of the week will take on fall-like qualities, fair but cooler than seasonal with daytime highs not far above 20oC, and likely below that for cottage country.

"Isolated showers ahead through Thursday (including lake effect showers), but partly to mostly sunny for Friday and a great looking weekend – lots of sunshine, but temperatures more typical of early to mid-September," Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham said early Tuesday.
