Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 10:12 AM - Snow blanketed parts of Alberta for the third day Friday, with full-fledged snowfall warnings in effect for parts of the province near the Rocky Mountains and Foothills.

It's due to a low pressure system over the northern Prairies that is bringing precipitation to some areas, with rain elsewhere in Alberta, along with rain-snow mixes in transition areas.

"In the Alberta Elbow and Mountain Parks regions, heavy snow continues with total amounts of 10 to 15 cm expected," Environment Canada says. "The snow will gradually taper off later today and tonight."

Cooler temperatures have also lingered, and Weather Network meteorologist Nadine Hinds-Powell says it may be cool enough for some shots of wet snow through to Calgary overnight Thursday into Friday.

For Friday, the upper trough will continue to bring showers, though largely in central and northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and snow will have ended in Alberta by that point.

"October-like weather dominates into the weekend for the west and central parts of the Prairies, and spreads east," Weather Network meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham says.
