A record no one wanted to break: St. John's snowy streak

Tyler Hamilton

Sunday, May 27, 2018, 4:37 PM - Well, for St. John's, snow isn't particularly unusual in May, especially the first half, but something highly unusual has taken place to finish off the month. Normally, St. John's records more than a trace of snow just a couple times during the month of May, but the streak that's transpired from May 24th-27th is unprecedented.

Brian Walsh, a veteran Newfoundland forecaster, tweeted this stunning revelation...

And, this being measurable snow makes the stat even more impressive. That's at least 0.2 cm of snowfall recorded for four straight days!

How is this happening? What's going on in our atmosphere to allow snow this late in the season to fly across much of Newfoundland and Labrador?

(SUMMER FORECAST 2018 PREMIERES MAY 28 – ALL DAY EVENT: Will a developing El Niño affect our summer as much as La Niña affected our winter?)

Low pressure systems south of Greenland have been effective conduits to bring the cold, Arctic air south, much to the chagrin of local residents. So, if you want to lay some blame, you can always blame these low pressure systems, or the cool temperature anomalies that have been oscillating around Hudson Bay over the past couple of weeks.

Systems thrive with these strong temperature gradients, and these low pressure systems have also created a northwest flow across the area, the perfect recipe for snow. Although, some of this has been luck, or poor timing, with larger snowfalls occurring through the overnight or early morning hours, avoiding any sort of warming by the sun's radiation.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Well, if you just watched that video and were hoping for sustained periods of warmth, you are unfortunately out of luck. A couple more rounds of below seasonal temperatures are set to migrate into the region. It looks like we can't quite shake winter, just yet, Newfoundland and Labrador. Hang in there.
