Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 7:52 AM - As heavy rain and soaring temperatures heighten the flood risk across southern Ontario, a much more wintry set up is taking place across northern regions. Freezing rain and heavy snow could lead to treacherous travel with the threat for road closures and power outages as well.
The freezing rain developed through the overnight hours on Monday resulting in several school bus cancellations across northeastern Ontario on Tuesday due to icy roads.
"A few millimetres of ice accretion on exposed structures and untreated surfaces are possible," says Environment Canada in a freezing rain warning issued for the region. "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays. Road closures are possible. Utility outages may occur."
The freezing rain may continue into Tuesday evening before a transition over to just rain.
