On Friday afternoon, Environment Canada issued a series of watches, warnings and special weather statements for the region.

"Rain is expected for the coast and Avalon initially with some mixing to the north and a swath of snow for southern New Brunswick, PEI and much of Newfoundland northwest of the Avalon," says Weather Network meteorologist Doug Gillham, adding that the mixed precipitation will change to snow for much of the Maritimes as the system tracks northeast.

"Between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow are likely for the Cape Breton Island and parts of Newfoundland. It will also become windy across the region, especially Newfoundland."

The strong winds could create the potential for blowing snow and reduced visibility Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Motorists are advised to check the weather forecast before heading out and drive according to the conditions.
