Snow, prolonged freezing rain closes schools in Newfoundland

Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 8:22 AM - A messy and wintry system has pushed into Newfoundland following a weekend of recording breaking warmth and damaging flooding.  Snow and the threat for significant freezing rain forced school closures in parts of central and eastern Newfoundland as well as on the Avalon Peninsula outside the St. John's metro area early Tuesday morning.

The precipitation over the Avalon Peninsula started off as snow, changing to ice pellets and freezing rain through the day on Tuesday. Most areas are expected to see six to eight hours of freezing rain before tapering off through the afternoon hours.

"For the Northern Avalon, significant freezing rain is expected to be mainly over southern sections, including Whitbourne to Bay Roberts and southeastward to Conception Bay South," says Environment Canada in a freezing rain warning issued Tuesday morning.

Ice build-up due to freezing rain could make surfaces such as highways, roads and walkways extremely slippery and hazardous.

"Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas," EC warns.

The prolonged freezing rain combined with sustained strong winds between 30-40 km/h may produce some power outages as well.

Heavy snow will also be a big threat from Burgeo towards Gander, Terra Nova and Clarenville with 20-25+ cm possible before a change over to ice pellets.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations," adds EC.

By the evening hours, the system will depart the region with some residual blowing snow still a concern.
