New technology allows owners to control and track their pets

Sunday, August 16, 2015, 5:22 PM - As parts of the country embrace intense heat, sadly more stories emerge about dogs and hot cars. But what if you could keep track of your dog's temperature?

This has been made possible through the newly developed Buddy smart dog collar. Created by Squeaker, the device is an LED collar that allows pet owners to track their four-legged-friend's activity and location.
Squeaker develops pet technology and is based in Melbourne, Australia and Los Angeles.

Much like the Apple Watch, the Buddy collar offers GPS tracking, a temperature sensor, an accelerometer and more. It's waterproof and comes with Bluetooth connectivity, a rechargeable battery, a built-in OLED information display and several lighting effects to keep your pooch visible from potential collisions.

The temperature sensor alerts you when your dog gets too hot or too cold and has the ability to connect to your smart-home devices, the Kickstarter campaign reads. This allows you to adjust your thermostat accordingly so your dog's environment is safe and comfortable when you are away from home.

There is also the ability to set custom "safe zones." Through the creation of a virtual activity fence, an alert can be sent via push notification or text if the dog moves outside of the set designated area.

Once on the market, the collars will sell for $180. Squeaker's Kickstarter campaign has already achieved 25 per cent of its $280,000 goal.
