'Shawshank Redemption' tree toppled by wind

Tuesday, July 26, 2016, 5:28 PM - A tree featured in the 1994 film "The Shawshank Redemption" has been toppled by the wind.

The magnificent oak tree was made famous near the end of the film in a scene where Red, played by Morgan Freeman, reads a note left behind by his friend Andy, played by Tim Robbins.

"No good thing ever dies," reads an excerpt from the letter.

The tree had been drying out for some time. Jody Snavely, director of media for the Mansfield/Richland County Convention Bureau, told the Mansfield News Journal her team was expecting the tree to fall at some point in the future.

“It was inevitable because the tree was dry in the inside,” she told the publication.

A storm packing winds up to 54 km/h hit the area Friday morning. That was enough to send the tree, which lost a portion of its truck during a 2011 windstorm, tumbling to the ground.

For now, the fallen tree is staying put on the Shawshank Trail, a tour of locations used in the film in Lucas, Ohio.

Fans will still have time to catch a glimpse of the tree before it's moved. No plans have been made yet, but the tree's remains may be moved to another location on the trail and put on display.
