Supercells, hail threaten central Prairies

Thursday, July 27, 2017, 8:56 PM - Heat warnings have arrived across the Prairies to start the evening -- and with these warnings comes an increased risk for supercells and severe thunderstorms which could produce hail.
Heat warnings covered much of the region, including the cities of Calgary, Edmonton and Regina as of Thursday evening. Albertans in particular should watch the skies, as storms have the most potential to turn severe in the central areas of the province, including in the Edmonton and Red Deer area. The main threats will these storms are hail and associated strong winds.
"Supercells are possible through the evening hours – storms will propagate eastward into the evening potentially remaining severe," Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says.
Hamilton says strong, damaging winds and hail larger than 5 cm are possible in storms with the strongest updrafts, though supercells that do develop will likely be isolated, and tornado threat is low.
On Friday, the threat will slide slightly to the south from Calgary to Rocky Mountain House, and mostly west of Highway 2.
Heat warning remains for most of Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as north Manitoba. Friday will see the most impressive heat in southern Saskatchewan.
