Thursday, November 1, 2018, 6:17 PM - Hundreds of cars, including Maseratis, were destroyed on October 30 when a fire triggered by sea water that caused batteries to explode ripped through the port of Savona, Italy.

The vehicles were stockpiled at the port awaiting export, local media reported.

The fire broke out when stormy conditions hit the region.

"Salt is a conductive of electricity so what happens is if the water goes over top of the battery it’ll create a positively charged sodium and negatively charged chlorine ions," says automotive mechanic Barry Chant.

"So when those two chemicals mix together, they’re combustible."

This video, uploaded by Italian firefighters, shows cars burning as emergency services respond.

The storm is part of the same system that brought massive flooding to Venice and killed at least 11 people.
